Harry was responsible for Annie's son going to prison. Now, Annie is giving him a chance to redeem himself by solving her "Little puzzle." With Cat in tow, Harry's persistence leads him to dank cellars, people of dubious character, and murder. Cat meets her nemesis in the form of Cee Cee Dorfman, an obsessed with black iron and armed with a tube of tuna flavored kitty toothpaste.

Annie Dream The Harry Neal and Cat Mystery Series Book 3 eBook Bentley Dadmun

It is #3 in a series of nine to be found on Kindle. Think of this as a nine course meal that should be enjoyed in the proper order for full enjoyment, beginning with the before dinner wine. (Harry loves wine.) Start with "Emma" for the beginning of Harry Neal and Cat's relationship and progress through "Angie," "Annie's Dream," "Harry's Lament," "Short Round," Sister's," "Sophie's Gambit," and "Harry's Game" to finish with "Dead Dead Dead, The Little Girl Said." The first eight are really novellas and the last is a full length mystery novel. The author says the first three, in particular, should be read in order. I've arranged the others as I would and did read them.
If you like cat mysteries but have had enough of librarians, book store owners, antique shop owners, professors and middle aged ladies snuggling up to the town constable, cats who are bigger than the average cat, tougher than the average cat, speak English, are clairvoyant, walk through walls or are generally smarter than their human companions, you are ready for and will love Bentley Dadmun's Harry and Cat. Harry is a believable guy who is facing geezerhood and has told the world to shove it. Cat is just cat. I'll say no more to spoil the reading experience.
Trust me, take it from the top, get to know Harry and Cat book by book and you may find yourself, as I did, finishing up this literary feast at 4:18 AM in the morning saying, "Damn, that was fun!"

Annie Dream The Harry Neal and Cat Mystery Series Book 3 eBook Bentley Dadmun Reviews

This is just a review of the series in general. Bentley Dadmun's novellas are beautifully written, exceptionally plotted and always contain a story there for all of us -- all we have to do is look and understand. Plus the mystery he solves is pretty nifty, too. And I love Cat. And all the characters in this small college town. Anyone who is interested in looking for a exemplary example of how to develop a character(s) -- will find it in Dadmun's stories.
Loved it. Now I have read them all, now what do I read? Hope he writes some more real soon. Love the small town NH setting.
I love this series of books. They are even better having been edited. I look forward to more adventures with Harry Neal and cat.
...But really too short - at 46 pages - to be a book. I'd feel more like I got my money's worth if Bentley Dadmun short stories were combined into one purchase.
I will say it again, because it is worth repeating, Mr. Dadmun's books are the real deal in one well written sentence, the author can send us spinning in his realistic tales, hypnotizing us into a scene, a world, a story, a medley of emotions, just in solving a mystery of the past, more often what can be considered a perfect crime.
His are short stories packing the punch of hundred of pages long stories, and the mood I find myself into when closing one of Harry Neal and Cat mysteries is always refreshed and entertained.
I've completed the sequence up to Annie's dream...I do so like these characters and this world but wish these were true books and not novellas - be worned oh reader that all of the H.N & Cat series are novellas except DEAD DEAD DEAD. Too short - I want more! However, there are some clear patterns that keep showing up in all of the stories - an evil dead done long ago and now the old crusty evil doers must now pay the price...delivered by Harry of course. And what is up with the female body builders showing up everywhere - I get the sense that BD does not like overweight slobs, does not go into that good night of old age with ease, and likes wine a bit too much (but I do so understand the angst indeed).
Clearly the stories are crafted by someone who knows the art of writing well BUT odd typos consistently show up - which, I must admit, make me laugh and for some strange reason like the stories even more so. A HORSE whisper? and the old man who wore a BATHROOM ??! (hoarse...bathrobe). and 'weigh' typically comes as 'weight'...
And BD who are you I wonder?
Jump in folks - the water (wine) is just fine in Harry's world.
In this, the third of the Harry Neal and Cat series, Harry is asked to solve the riddle of some keys found by Harry's landlord in the back of a drawer. In true form, Harry gets hooked by the investigation, which turns dark quickly. In the end, he does solve the riddle for Annie, but along the way he finds another buried crime and brings it to light.

The mystery in every Harry and Cat series is always deeply buried at the start and unfolds only with hard investigative work by Harry, and this one is no exception. In this series, though, the back story and rich character interactions are worth reading even by themselves.
